Great book very informative, showing how much industry there was in Birmingham in the 1900's.So sad looking back and reflecting on what we have now.

My grandparents all came from Birmingham. And when I visited them the city - epitomised by the dirty and ill-painted buses - always seemed unattractive. Later I worked there and found the place even worse than I had expected. At that stage - the early 1980s, it suffered a decline due to politics. (I believe that the extent of this decline was unnecessary, avoidable and highly unfortunate for the country.) But what is clear is that Birmingham was the heart beating at the centre of the Empire, full of activities of all sorts mostly unknown outside the world of Enoch and Elie. This book is excellent for what it sets out to achieve and it is just unfortunate that a history like this isn't page-turning stuff. But it was more than I had hoped and dealt with the parts I was interested in competently.
